Still, after trailing by as many as 14, they were able to cut the deficit to three in the final minute of regulation to make a game of it. Elijah Millsap tallied 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Howard Crawford scored 15 and Aaron Johnson finished with 12. Johnson is the catalyst at point guard, having notched 10 assists twice over the last four games. Millsap is the team's leading scorer (16.1) and rebounder (9.3), and he ranks second in school history with 14 double-doubles on the year. Crawford is scoring 12.4 ppg, while Sanders adds 10.7 ppg to the mix.
Leading the way for UTEP is Randy Culpepper, a 38.4 percent shooter from beyond the arc (76-of-198) who is averaging 18.5 ppg. Derrick Caracter generates 14.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per tilt, while Jeremy Williams (10.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Arnett Moultrie (10.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg) provide some additional punch in the paint. On the season, the Miners are outscoring their opponents by an average of 12.2 ppg. They turned up the defense on Tuesday night, holding Marshall to 38.8 percent shooting from the floor to overcome a 50-35 rebounding deficit. UTEP also made the most of its three-point attempts, connecting on 8-of-15 out on the perimeter. Culpepper knocked in 7-of-11 threes and piled up 32 points. Caracter added 18 points in the win, while Claude Britten scored 14 in a 15-minute shift off the bench.
